By: Josie Herring April 5th, 2019 WARNING: Spoiler’s Ahead! If you haven’t watched Netflix’s original hit show, On My Block, you’re missing out on one of the best shows to hit the streaming service. Composed of a beautiful storyline, a majority of POC characters, and an amazing soundtrack, On My Block, brings a lot to the table. The show first came to Netflix in March of 2018 and was immediately a hit. The ending of Season 1 left viewers on the edge of their seats and craving more. People could hardly wait for Season 2 and when it finally came, people couldn’t contain themselves. Season 2 brought with it a wave of emotions, happiness, sadness, and anger.
In Season Two, the core group, made up of Monse, Cesar, Ruby, and Jamal, is back together and with big problems. Monse is desperately trying to understand her bond with her mother all while trying to save Cesar from the ongoing violence in their neighborhood. Ruby is dealing with his own vast set of problems after being shot at the end of Season One. Cesar is desperately trying to keep himself alive and hidden away in safety from the Prophets. Lastly, that leaves Jamal, who after a long time of being doubted and laughed at, found the Rollerworld money that everyone believed was fake. Throughout the season we see the long and tedious process of “cleaning” the money and making it safe to use. Season Two was beautifully put together, and overall I don’t have any complaints about the new season. The characters stories all came together perfectly and everything connected smoothly. One of my favorite things about season two was Jasmine’s role. In the first season, she seemed like a supporting character, there for comedic relief. In Season two, she was again, a comedic relief but her character was so much more important. She helped the whole group confront their problems and became much more important than just being a supporting character. Overall, On My Block, is a fun and relatable show for young adults. The characters are people that teens can really connect with and relate to. I will forever recommend this show for anyone who needs some hilarious but serious entertainment.

By: Laramie Ward April 7, 2019 7:00 AM - It’s up and at ‘em time for the newsies of New York, because unlike those in 1899, we have the privilege of going to school five days a week.
8:30 AM - First block begins -- as actors with this big of a show, we try our absolute best to focus on the curriculum. But, with most of my teachers, they knew exactly what I was daydreaming about when my gaze left the board (Lo siento, Sr. Knight!). 10:00 AM - Flex begins! This is the time between first and second block when we get to go to either the theatre to help with props and set pieces, or to the studios to rehearse dances or assist in the organizing of costumes. 12:15 PM - Lunch! It’s important that we eat three well-balanced meals a day, especially during show week, the long hours of rehearsal require proper rest, hydration and nutrition! 3:30 PM - School is out, Newsies is in! Some go into town to grab some dinner before the 5:30 PM call, some stay at school to get ready and help set up for the show! 6 PM - Mic check! Newsies is a 19 mic show, meaning that the tech team and the actors that use mics need to be extra careful when using them - there are no extras to go around. The mic check covers both the actors mics and the band and orchestra mics. 6:35 PM - Vocal warm-up, notes, and ‘start the show’! “Just before the vocal warm-up is my favorite part,” says Elizabeth Ward. “It was a nice time to take a second to breathe and hang out with everyone.” ‘Start the show’ is a physical/vocal warmup that gets the cast hyped and into the right headspace for the show. Just after this, Spencer Ball, who played Jack Kelly, gave a speech followed by the directors notes from the night before. 6:50 PM - Several members of the cast gather for an optional prayer, while the rest of the cast prepares to go to places. This is a time that people can check their props and quick changes, and grab some water. 7 PM - Go time! For the next 2 ½ hours, we are living in 1899 New York. 10(ish) PM - Bows! After the cast visits with the audience, they head to their assigned dressing rooms to hang up, febreeze, and organize their costumes. As everyone heads home, they know they’ll get to do it all over again tomorrow. |
